Case In Point

One of the most notable storms that comes to mind is Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012.  Not all storms have the same elements of devastation that this storm caused, but it puts the need for weather interpretation in perspective.  On October 28th, 2012, high pressure developed over Canada and acted as a block to Sandy’s path.  Landfall coincided with one of the highest tides of the month creating a punishing storm surge, 14 ft in some areas.  And, New York Harbor suffered record 32 foot high waves.

There was widespread flooding, including subways and tunnels, associated from the storm surge.  Damages topped 60 billion and economic losses exceeded 18 billion.

Weather analytics enables you to understand the scope and timing of the storm. Enables leader coordination, communication and decisions for rerouting flights, staffing emergency personnel and performing safe evacuations.  In the worst case scenarios, pre-position appropriate supplies and shelters that are easily accessible, but out of harms way.

Assessment

hurricane-sandy-damaged-houses-highway-mantoloking-nj_fish-wildlife-service_980TruWeather works with you to identify where the natural environment impacts people, infrastructure and equipment to educate you and build a weather risk playbook for your ecosystem. Using historical weather and water data, studies,  future climate simulations and data sets, we build a menu of solutions that will give you rapid insight, proactive mitigation and quick response across all levels.

Our solutions provide comprehensive, one-stop-shop services that can drive better decisions and outcomes to keep the jurisdiction safe, secure and operating efficiently at bridges, tunnels, road networks, airports, marine ports and waterways.

At TruWeather, we believe an assessment is important to uncover the true impact and cost of weather on your agency and citizens, and set the stage for weather risk management and execution improvements.  The assessment objectives include:

  • Obtain a baseline assessment of how weather impacts people, infrastructure, and areas of interest
  • Understand how weather information flows across all levels of response teams
  • Determine specific weather pain points for your agency
  • Understand what events cause the most disruption
  • Gain knowledge about potential processes and capabilities you can develop and/or acquire to improve the accuracy, precision and use of weather intelligence

Client Weather and Water Program Assessment:  Our weather, marine and operations experts(Marine Expertise is provided by our partner MetOcean Solutions) will conduct a deep analysis of weather and marine pain points, client operations, workflows, and methods for making weather risk decisions.  Some high-level questions TruWeather will work with you to address include:

  • How does any type of weather or marine risk impact citizens, personnel forces, emergency response and infrastructure?
  • Are leaders and personnel weather aware?
  • Where do they get weather and water information?
  • What does weather cost the agency in terms of personnel or infrastructure mishaps; lost productivity; resources and citizen satisfaction?
  • Are the current weather information system infrastructure, processes and procedures adequate for the mission criticality and risks?
  • Are there weather solutions and data sources that can significantly improve organizational weather knowledge and risk decisions?
  • How is weather information fused within the organization’s systems and acted upon?
  • Are there better methods to communicate critical information across the ecosystem to ensure consistent data, and preparation, response and recovery actions?
  • Does leadership and personnel workflows, processes and knowledge optimize the use of weather intelligence to make decisions?
  • Are personnel properly trained on what to do with the information they receive?
  • Are there standard protocols for how to mitigate each type of threat and are the protocols consistently executed from the leadership down to the response level?
  • Is there an appropriate balance between safety with optimizing resources and productivity?

Emergency Management Weather and Water Mitigation, Preparation, Response and Recovery Playbook:  This service takes the results of the assessment and works with the organization to build a Weather Risk Management document that can drive leadership and personnel protocols in dealing with various weather risks at different phases of the event.

  • Outlines specific authorized weather and marine data sources for making decisions
  • Provides a framework to ensure streamline and effective weather knowledge communication at all levels of the organization
  • Ensures consistent processes and actions across the organization for various weather and water events, expected or unexpected
  • Drives customized thresholds, by function and work flow, alerting codes and custom messaging
